with "visible to the outside" I mean that I can get onto the bridge from
outside my LAN, to run services like httpd on the same computer as is my
bridging firewall.

no, I cannot ping the bridge from outside the LAN, even if I have my
firewall completely open (-P INPUT/FORWARD/OUTPUT/PREROUTING ACCEPT). I
can go across the bridge without problem, and firewalling works great.
