We know about brctl, of course. It is better, however, to manipulate, and especially to gather data, via the /proc kernel interfaces. Their formats change less often than text output and generally are easier to machine read rather then spawning an external program (not to mention that they are often orders of magnitude quicker).

I take your response to mean that there is no /proc interface... am I ass-u-me-ing too much?
