Don't get me wrong: I'm not voting for Bush. But it seems to me that
people who are undecided voters at this point can be undecided only
because they haven't studied the issues; they're undecided because they're
trying to figure out who they like better, who gives them a better gut
feeling about how he'll behave in office.

The thing about Bush is that he's a phony who's convinced himself that
he's real, and that conviction seems to persuade a lot of people. I think
the only reason he enjoys "bipartisan" success is that he's in Texas,
where democrats are nearly as conservative as republicans anyway. That,
or he has enough wealth and Washington connections that he can do favors
for his opponents that most governors wouldn't be able to pull off. I
have to admit that the only time I enjoyed a laugh during the 3rd debate
was at a Bush joke, and although I'm generally in favor of Gore's point of
view, I can see how a lot of people would be attracted to the man who
seems more easygoing and likable.

I agree. I just think that Gore has done a bad job of convincing people
what he himself is, by contrast, good news.
