Actually, I thought Brin's article was exceptionally logical. I loved
Star Wars as a kid and I still love it to some degree, as a lovely little
fairy tale, but Brin neatly puts his finger on many of the real weak
points that Lucas either couldn't or wouldn't address. It's a nice enough
movie, but one is allowed no sympathy for any of the bad guys, except
Vader, making it overly simplistic; one is given constantly contradictory
messages as far as the main "moral" point is concerned (hate is bad bad
bad, but at the same time there's nothing wrong with Leia? What?); and
all the stuff with Vader is just plain silly. I'm willing to accept that
Luke forgives him, and even that we, as viewers, are willing to at least
partially forgive him, but the intimation at the end with the appearance
of Vader's ghost that the universe at large has forgiven him is stupid.
