Well, according to some of the latest research coming out of the archaeology
from the Middle East, the number is being pushed back.  There are sites from
Turkey, which have been overlooked for years, that are just now being dated.
It seems like the "civilized" cultures who lived in Turkey may have actually
predated the Sumerians.

But of course, this is all very tentative preliminary stuff.  The jury will
really be out for years.
