Wow! Just finished a reread of this fantastic book and it was better the 2nd
time. Edge of your seat, can't put it down action sequences, excellent
characters that you care about just enough, magnificent constructs from drones
and memory forms to the Vavatch orbital and it's Megaships and of course the
GSVs.
The book juxtaposes the Culture and a warlike religious race, the Idirans,
from the viewpoint of an Idiran mercenary, Bora Horza Gobuchul. Horza is a
type of human variant called a Changer so named because his kind are able to
change their appearance. Other characters include a Culture agent, the crew
of a "Freeship" (pirates), and of course a Drone.
Highly recommended (if you can find a copy.)
Now, which IMB to read next. I have copies of Excession, Feersum Endjinn and
The Bridge (which I've read a few chapters of and am not sure at all what's
going on.
