This year has the perfect example - New Mexico. Both candidates
campaigned in New Mexico this year. If not for the electoral college, no
President, and no Presidential Candidate, would care two wits about New
Mexico. Instead, both candidates campaigned in New Mexico and had to be
exposed to New Mexican issues and needs.

That's unclear. This is the first election in the modern era where the
winner of the popular vote lost the Presidency. Given, however, that many
pundits predicted that Bush might win the popular vote this time around,
and Gore would win the electoral college, it hardly seems to clearly benfit
either party.
