I've heard these terms, but as a non-US citizen I'm not quite sure what the

Plain and simple logic. You ask millions of people "which person do you
want to be president". If candidate gets more votes than candidate B, it
means the majority of the people want A as their leader. The outcome
accurately reflects the will of the people.
Besides, it's more economical because you don't have to spend loads of time
and money on the second round of elections (the electoral college). Hey,
you're saving money that way -- that should appeal to you capitalists! <grin>

I'm not saying that; I'm saying that the better representative (according
to the people) is the one who gets the most popular vote. I don't make a
distinction between areas in the country.
