Actually Darryl, we are a democracy in name only. We've got the whole
electoral college crap, remember? And it's not much of a democracy when
you only ever have 2 choices. It may be called a democracy, but
is it really? I don't think so. A semi-democracy at best.

can we have a little perspective here. The number of choices is irrelevent.
In fact there were many more than two people running for pres (much to Gore's
chagrin) but at a national level with 200 million people there are only going
to be two viable candidates anyway. On a local level there are many more
choices and they are more personal. The electoral college may distort the
democratic process somewhat but it does not negate it. Name a country within
one order of magnitude of our size that better fullfills the the theoretical
and practical definition of a democracy.
