But, what if we *are* holier-than-thou?

You're joking, right?  To assume oneself to be morally superior, and to
declare that, because you claim moral superiority, that things you say are
wrong for others to do, are ok for you to do is hypocracy, plain and simple.
In my opinion, there is no greater sin than hypocracy.  IIRC, Jesus didn't
particularly take kindly to hypocracy either.  Here is Bible passage
(paraphrased from memmory) to prove my point to the moral-right-wing:
-If you have a sty in your own eye, and your neigbor has one as well, take
the one out of your eye and then help your neighbor.
-Judge not, lest you be judged.
-Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Tell me if you need more, there's lots of Bible passage that speeks out even
more directly against hypocracy (a parable about a person who begs to be
forgiven their debt but refused to forgive someone of their debt to them,
comes to mind).

If we spy on them (which I am sure we do) we shouldn't be
surprised/offended/angry if they spy on us... heck, we should invite other
countries to spy on us.  As the strongest world power, the United States
needs to let other countries know what is going on, so that other countries
1) know where we stand, and 2) know if they should or should not be afraid of
us.  The vast majority of countries have no reason to fear us, Russia
included.  We are not at war with them, nor is there any evidence of
hostilities.  If we show other countries that we have nothing to hide, that
would do much to ease tensions/hostilities caused by mistrust, the same
mistrust that fueled the Cold War for decades.
