Some of these may be too far out of your way, but maybe you can get a ride
with a group of people or something like that.
City Grill
Castle Hill
Bistro 88
Zoot
Josie's Cafe
Z-Tejas
Chez Zee
Saba Blue Water Cafe
Stubbs BBQ (Barbeque plus live music)
The Green Mesquite (More BBQ, plus maybe live music)
Scholz Beer Garden (Lots of beer, some BBQ)
Ruby's BBQ (good BBQ, lots of soul & R&B over the PA system)
6th Street & surrounding neighborhood: a downtown district full of bars,
live music venues, and little restaurants & things, most of whom I'm not
terribly familiar with. A hotel guidebook will probably list lots of
these kinds of places.

Julie hit on some of these. There's the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue at
Auditorium Shores, if you're into that kind of thing. Auditorium Shores
is a modest little park that runs along the river that goes through
downtown. There's also Zilker Park and Botanical Gardens, just west of
downtown: these are pleasant open spaces where people to go walk and play
soccer/footbal, etc. Austin has a fairly new art museum downtown--I've
never been, so I don't know if it's worth your time. You can always hang
out on 6th street and watch the human pincushions walk by. :-)
The state capital building is often worth a trip and is a nice place to
visit, as is the University of Texas itself.
Finally, for a good look at what's going on in Austin, try visiting
www.auschron.com. That's the website for our local "alternative"
newspaper, and it has listings for what's going on around town. I believe
it's updated weekly, on Friday mornings.

KGSR 107.1 FM
KUT 90.5 FM
Those are about the only ones I listen to.
