You have a good point there. I consider a Mini-van to be a fair trade-off,
since it is designed for family safety in mind as a primary selling point.
In a F=MA analysis, the mini-van stacks pretty well against your average
SUV.

I have seen a Ford Expedition vs Honda Accord. The Expedition started to
crush the Honda before verging off. The air bag went off in the Honda,
stunning the driver, but the Expedition airbag did not go off.
Of course the Honda was totaled, but suprisingly the Expedition was totalled
as well, even though there was minimal cosmetic damage (bent bumper). The
frame was bent, and that was that. Of course the owner of the Expedition
went out and got a new one, with more features.
Of course, SUV owners pay more insurance, but some of that cost is passed
onto non-SUV owners. When a 38,000$ vehicle can be totaled in a 20 MPH
(Sorry Alberto) accident, someone has to pay. The SUV owners can't possibly
cover all of the costs related to SUV related accidents.

I still will not buy a large SUV. Maybe a truck, but not a SUV.
