Yep - so old, I think, that it's not even considered today as anything other
than a given - on some levels. I don't think it's a big component in how we
live our lives - as others have pointed out, we do expend a lot of energy
raising our kids - but I suspect there's some effect of this belief on our
society. Without anything to compare/contrast with, though, I'm just
babbling aimlessly.
