That's crap, Dan. People won't go bankrupt if the government decides to
raise taxes on energy.
Since the oil crisis in the 1970's, taxes on car fuels here have gone up
dramatically (IIRC, some 90% of the price of fuel is taxes nowadays). No
hardworking Dutchman has gone bankrupt because of it. A few years ago, the
government put an "ecotax" on energy. This lead to higher energy bills, but
no hardworking Dutchman has gone bankrupt because of it. We pay a sales tax
on almost everything here; that tax went up from 17.5% to 19% last January.
This made a lot of goods more expensive, but again, no hardworking Dutchman
has gone bankrupt because of it.
You'll need one hell of a tax raise to cause people to go bankrupt. A raise
of income tax to 90% of your entire income might do that, but going
bankrupt because of taxes on energy? Puh-lease.
