Prescott is an old-fashioned labour politician, not the most competent
but popular with the more traditional party supporters. He doesn't
have much polish, but people like that. He's also known for mangling
his syntax.
The legal opinions the media cited were on average that it was
borderline self defence because it may have been a disproportionate
response.
If Prescott knew it was only a egg and didn't think there was
any further threat (which there probably wasn't) then he shouldn't
have punched out. If Prescott didn't know what had hit and thought
he was still in danger he was right to hit back. The courts would
rule based on what a reasonable man would think.
