By US standards, anyone who is a citizen is an American, regardless of national origin. I'm guessing Bell became a citizen. He did his work in the US. To us, that makes him an American. At a 98% level, we are a nation of immigrants. In the US, nationality is not a matter of being part of a certain ethnic group.
