"Liberation" - The act of liberating or the state of being liberated. 

"Liberate" -  To set free, as from oppression, confinement, or foreign
control. 

Given that the invasions of the USSR imposed opression, confinement, *and*
foreign control.
Also given that the invasions of the USA resulted in the liberty and
freedom for the inhabitants - most importantly, the freedom to kick the
United States out (as France and the Philippines both did.)   

I'd say that the reason for this, quote, "funny thing" is that *that* is
exactly what those words mean!  Do you care to disagree?
