What else would they have to protect themselves from? OK, they felt the
need to protect themselves from internal opposition, but you don't destroy
*that* by putting troops at your borders.

Actually, Canada keeps a huge military presence on the border for the
upcoming liberation of the USA. But you're not supposed to know about that
