Yes! It's a really strange combintion of FIrst Contact and Menace from
Space themes I guess, with a few bizarre twists. IF you've read some of
Benford's nonfiction (eg _Deep Time_) you'll recognize the themes: what if
we encounter an intelligence that really does think in terms of billions
of years? I really liked the woman character, too.
Y'know what's weird? His earlier _Cosm_ was based on an experiment tehy're
actually going to do at Brookhaven that had some (ignorant) people freaked
out about how it wa going to make a black hole and we're all gonna
die....well, look at the afterword for the truth on that (there was some
worry about strange matter, but that's been pretty much put to rest; I
remember Geoffrey Landis posting on Usenet to settle those crazy
rumors!) But then, what's in Benford's *next* novel? Well, a black hole,
of course...LOL ; -)
