Ok.....the tree on the top of a building is an old tradition. When the frame
of a building is completed to the highest point, you set a tree at the top
and celegrate with a "Topping Out" party. Here in Texas, we have bar-b-que
and (if the general contractor is enlightened<G> or liberal minded) beer. If
it is a large project, they might even hire a band and party hardy for
hours.
The point at which a building "tops out" is usually the same point where the
largest numbers of workers are presently involved with the project. So it is
the best time for general contractor and/or the owners to show appreciation
for the workers.
Try to imagine a bunch of drunk construction workers partying 30 or 40
stories up with no walls on the outside of the building. Its a pretty
unforgetable experience.
