Whoa.. hang on - the founding fathers certainly WERE debating minutae of
law, wording, etc etc  They were not the United States then - they were
13 colonies (plus representatives from the Republic of Vermont ;) trying
to find a way to forge their disparate cultures and societies together
into one nation-state/collective.

You better believe they were out to further their own ends.
