Your friends are correct. WotC has somehow managed to make the system
pretty munchkin-proof. The skills are all broad enough to be useful, and
the addition of feats allows you to customize your PC within the parameters
of the system, instead of needing to go outside of the rules to do it.
They made a lot of small refinements to the rules that cleared up minor,
irritating issues; I could go on for some time about them, but it is a lot
of minutiae, and may make the other listees' eyes roll back into their
heads. :)
That's not to say that it doesn't have its flaws; attacks of opportunity are
stil a bone of contention, and if you hated the D&D class/level/ability
score system before, this isn't likely to change your mind. But it's a
major step forward, and has made D&D more fun than it's been in ages.
