Mars isn't the only other planet in the Universe.  (Though granted, it is 
the closest one that is even marginally livable in its current state.)  And 
there's always terraforming . . .

I didn't say anything about "abandoning" this one or waiting until "after 
we've screwed it over."

In fact, "waiting", period, is what I'm objecting to.  (See below.)
