I don't think you made a very accurate comparison here. When someone 
becomes an alcoholic, he can become a wreck, both physically and mentally. 
Killing someone in self-defense is likely to have a great emotional impact 
on the killer, scarring him for life.

However, I don't see how the American public was physically and emotionally 
damaged for life when their military dropped nuclear bombs on Japan.
