Well, honestly, Sun told Microsoft to yank it and Microsoft would have been
violating a contract if it hadn't. (c.f. various press releases that came
out after the settlement and when this latest issue attracted public
attention.) Sun's been shooting itself in the foot regarding Java since
Netscape 2.0 and shows no signs of stopping. I spent a good 4 years on the
front lines of Java development outside and inside Microsoft, and it's been
painful to watch Sun's mistakes.
(Interesting annecdote: In the late 1970's/early 1980's, James Gosling - one
of the creators of Java - was employed at the University of Calgary as a
help desk geek and related tasks for the University's academic computing
department, including Multics support. In the early 1990's I had essentially
the same job, working for the same people he did since they never moved on.
Of course, I didn't go off and write a version of Emacs or create Java or
anything quite that noteable.)
