It's a cultural thing in third world countries.  The more children you
have the more work they can do for you, the more prosperous you are. 
It's not a catholic thing by any means.  The muslim countries are that
way too (if not more so).  The most populous coutries in the world are
some of the poorest (i.e. India, China etc.).  2/3 of the world
population is not 'christian'.

That said, Islam is the fastest growing religion.  Remember Brin's
