That would be for the same reason the US removed *its* red paint 
(specifically the red circle inside the white star, and the red and white 
stripes on the tail) at the same time. Pilots would mistake the red circle 
for the Japanese "meatball" (the Rising Sun) and fire upon their own fellows.
