I believe that you can do the former without any more consequences than the
latter.
After all, how many jobs are there where you can refuse assignments from
you boss and not ruin your career?
Heck, even in the National *Park Service*, if you are requested to go
somewhere, and refuse, you aren't doing your career any favors. After
all, *somebody* has to work at Big Bend NP (in Southern Texas, summer
average temp. @110 degrees F, and 90% humidity) or Homestead National
Historic Site (in central Nebraska.) :)
