It would have shown some respect. I think the fans were upset at the
apparent lack of respect. It's a show of solidarity in the whole bigger
scheme of things. It would be one thing if a fan hadn't stood, but for
the team, the reason for the fans being there in the first place to
disrespect the feeling of togetherness was a bit much, is my guess.

Absolutely not. Players haven't been fined or anything for not
remaining at attention during the national anthem before; I've seen some
of them chewing during the national anthem on televised games. (Some of
the chewing was probably tobacco, the rest would be gum....) As a
player, you wouldn't normally stand for seventh-inning stretch
activities.

As someone else said in another post, the Boston fans aren't entirely
happy with their team to begin with. Short version of why: They were
actually ahead of the Yankees (the New York American League team, the
Red Sox's greatest rivals) earlier in the season, and later they got
themselves pretty much eliminated from a playoff spot, while the Yankees
are at the top of the division and will be in the playoffs. The long
version of why could take 50+ posts and a good chunk of time to hash out
in a thread. :)
