Heh, lived in Rye, N.Y. then Morristown N.J. in the early
'60s (my Dad worked very briefly at Cornell Med School by
the way) and was a Yanks fan for a while. But when we moved
to the Boston area, Carl Yastremski got the (last) triple
crown, though with very low numbers, and the Red Sox took
Gibson and the Cardinals to seven games in the series (1967).

I was still a Boston fan well into the '80s even though I'd
been living on the west coast since '71, but my son got
interested in the A's and the Sox lost the series again (to
the Mets) despite being a few outs away from breaking the
curse, so I started following the home team.

As for watching a game in the tube or in the park - its two
different things. Dan's correct in saying that you can
really get into the pitch by pitch strategy while watching
on TV, but actually being there, screaming your fool head
off, experiencing the camaraderie of a spirited crowd,
seeing and hearing the crack of the bat and watching the
trajectory of a home run ball all the way from home plate
into the stands - jumping to your feet and screaming with
satisfaction, well you can't get that on the couch.

I was lucky enough to be at the game that clinched the
wildcard for the A's. The crowd was rather subdued because
of the tragic events. I guess we're a bit more secular out
here - we sang America the Beautiful at the stretch. It was
a great game capping a three game sweep of the Mariners (who
hadn't lost three in a row all year prior to that series).

So soon we'll be playing those Yanks in the post season
again. We almost beat them last year. And I've got tickets
for game 4. Do I hope the Bums win one so I get to go?
Naaaaa.... 8^)
