We *know* that we must have gunpowder before building nukes and destroying the whole world. Middle-age alchemists didn't. So, they had to research Astrology, the Philosopher's Stone, etc, together with Chemistry, Metallurgy, etc. IMHO, Civ should be *fuzzy* about what is science and what is bogus. IOW, there should be some kind of hidden variables that say that the _world_ is x% science, y% faith, z% mind-powers, etc. And if you research Gunpowder in order to defend Buffalo with Mosqueteers, maybe your opponent is researching Advanced Hymns and will blast your city walls to dust!
