So why do we read SF that uses the same future technologies?  The AC 
manual says that much of the game was inspired by SF and even has a 
suggested reading list that includes Bear and Vinge among others 
(alas, not db).

In any case, I think the tech. in the game is well done and 
generally pretty believable.
