The dirty secret of speed limits in this country is that they are *not*
based on safety. Instead, they are a relic of attempts to boost fuel
efficiency during the 1970's.
Personally, I believe that speed limits should be raised to 85 on most
straight limited-access highways - and then there would be a far greater
respect for the law.
