I've tried that, FWIW.  When I did, I found that a thread of long posts
turned into a hydrid monster of two or three or four or five interconnected
threads of long posts.  I know for me, that makes harder to follow.

I think the suggestion of forgetting about responding to individual points
in a long posts can be worthwhile, if an answer as a whole can be devised.
It is probably worth the extra work if it adds to understanding. I think
that the time it adds to understanding and the time it confuses the preson
being responded to may balance out.  I'll be willing to experiment, but I'm
guessing that there isn't one best way to do it.
