Subject: David Brin, Mystery Writer?

As I promised...er...someone, I started reading Kiln People. I'm about 1/4th of the way through, and I have to wonder, when added to his other works that I've read so far (primarily the Uplift books, though I've acquired a passing knowledge of Glory Season through the discussions), if DB doesn't secretly wish he was a mystery writer.

Or is it simply that exploring secrets is just so much a part of science fiction that it just seems that way? Thoughts?

There is a long, honored history of Sci-Fi myster writing.  Think of Issiac Asimov's Robot novels with Elija Baley.  A non-spoiler comment on the book.  For the first 50 pages, I was a bit bored.  After 100 or so, I thought it was OK, but below DB's standards.  Now, with 100 pages to go, the book is looking pretty good.
