I totally missed that in the news. But I just did a search, and sure
enough, a number of small or non-US news sites covered this story.
One of the stories even mentioned that the US news didn't seem to be
following the story. I wonder why it was not well covered in the big US
newspapers.

I've heard the same thing, and while it may be true, I've only seen
hearsay supporting it. What evidence convinced you of this viewpoint?
