> The people who did the most to convince me to try to join (an attempt > that has been, as I wrote earlier, sadly unsuccessful so far) were all > Army officers who thought I should join the Navy. A similar thing happened to me. About a year ago, when I was stationed at the office of the MDD (The Defense Dept.'s Social Services people), a woman who worked there as a civilian signed up for military service and recommended I do the same. It sounded like a good idea (switching to military service *does* have its advantages) so I looked into it. The military did not want me: "sorry, you are too old". Gawd, that is depressing to hear when you are only 33 and still got 32 years till retirement... :-( Of course, that woman would have been better off than me anyway: because of her job and level of education she started her military career as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, and got promoted to First Lieutenant after finishing the military part of her education at the Royal Military Academy. With my current level of education, the best I would get was a starting rank of Sergeant, be sent to Royal Military School and be promoted to Sergeant 1st Class after graduating. The only possible promotions after that would be to Sergeant-Major and eventually Adjudant, but that would be it. No career as an officer for me. But hey, sometimes even officers (so far, up to the rank of Major) salute when I show up to solve their computer problems, so who am I to complain... :-) Jeroen -- who is quite happy serving Queen & Country as a civilian. _________________________________________________________________________ Wonderful World of Brin-L Website: http://www.Brin-L.com Tom's Photo Gallery: http://tom.vanbaardwijk.com
