They were published as individual stories in a magazine (Analog?) and
then collected in books. My father got the magazines, and my mother
read that series of stories, and Shaw's slow glass stories, and that's
about all she talks about having read. (Oh, there was also a
tongue-in-cheek essay about FASEG (Fairly Amplification by Stimulated
Emission of Godmothers), but I don't know who wrote that one....)
_Beginning Operations_ is an omnibus that starts with _Hospital
Station_, and includes _Star Surgeon_ and _Major Operation_ as well. So
if anyone is interested in the series, that's probably the easiest thing
to get your hands on.
