There's an episode in TOS that had Kirk split into two Kirks, with different personalities (two Kirks! a frightening thought); the Mirror Universe episode in TOS; another episode in TNG that split a character in two. I also seem to remember a particularly nasty transporter accident at the beginning of The Wrath of Khan. In addition, the transporter always seems to break down when someone is stranded on a nasty planet. It occurs to me that maintenance in Starfleet is really not a high priority. john
