Depending on your definition of 'rpg' there are a few games that superior
hands down.

1. Darklands
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Final Fantasy II  (4 in Japan)
4. Final Fantasy III (6 in Japan)
5. Betrayal at Krondor

To name a 'few'.
