First, I hope your daughter's friend is going to be OK.

My feeling is that there are more kids today growing up with the belief that human 
life doesn't have any value.  They don't value their own lives, or the lives of 
others.  And the fact is, any kid can get a gun.

Quick anecdote: Several years ago I lived outside of D.C., and I used to enjoy playing 
hoops at the local blacktops and gyms.  I'm in a gym in Bethesda when these two kids 
(maybe 19,20; I was 26 or so at the time) started arguing over a call, and it 
degenerated into pushing and shoving and threats.  As it settled down, two other kids 
the same age were talking about it, and I quote, "He talkin' 'bout how he gonna go out 
to his car and get a gun.  Man, everybody got a gun."  And I sat there thinking, "Um, 
I don't got a gun..."

The idea that these kids thought nothing of shooting each other over a pick-up 
basketball game was chilling.
