A Mercury - I think it's a 19-footer. Pretty much your basic beginner's centerboard dinghy. Manuevers pretty well and is fairly stable, but it has problems tacking in low winds, which can be an issue for beginners. It's still a great boat to learn on.
You should think about taking a course on a slightly bigger boat. Off Shore Sailing has schools on the east coast and in Captiva Florida. They sail 28 foot "Colgates" (the founder of the school). A neat stable racing boat. After about 5 days you really can sail a machine.
Me again:
Thanks very much for the advice - I just looked at their website. Very interesting, although a bit pricey. I also see that they do, in fact, have a NYC location, something that I really like, as everyone I spoke to said that you couldn't sail in NYC w/o a yacht of your own. Community Boating, where I'm sailing at the moment, does have significantly larger boats, it's just that I'm not yet qualified to use them, and won't have time to become so qualified in my remaining couple of weeks in Boston. But I'll definitely keep Offshore in mind and try to use some vacation time from McKinsey to take one of their courses.

As is usual for me I've become slightly obsessive
about sailing. A month ago I had never _been onboard_ a sailboat.
Now I was very upset because I couldn't get out this weekend because I was
packing for a month in Dartmouth. Like Miles Vorkosigan, my personality
appears to lack a rheostat :-)
Again, thanks for the advice. It would never
even have occurred to me to look at these guys. Did you sail with
them?
