The deal with extensive training is different. Usually when your employer
pays for extensive training, there is not a non-compete clause in your
contract, but a clause that says that if you leave the company within a
certain period of time, you will have to repay them all or part of the cost
of the training.

For example, when I joined the Defense Dept., my employer paid for my MCSE
training. My contract contains a clause that says that if I leave the Dept.
within two years, I have to pay them back all the costs.
