Europeans tend to be much more left-wing than Americans, and have always had greater affinity for our Democratic, rather than our Republican Presidents. >2. How are we supposed to take you seriously, when you make statements like this?: First off, the ability of Hussein to mount chemical and biological weapons on Scud missiles is not doubted by anybody AFAIK. Secondly, even if we charitably assume that by "WMD" you actually meant "nuclear weapons", the problem is that Saddam Hussein has come very close once to building a bomb (at Osirisk in the 80's), and when UN inspectors left Iraq in the late 90's, they said that he may only be a few years away. Much more importantly, however, ONCE HUSSEIN GETS A NUKE ITS TOO LATE! Just think about what a disaster it would be for Hussein to launch a nuke at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia (home to thousands of American citizens), or against the main Saudi Oil Terminal, or even into Tel Aviv - all of which are within range of his Scuds. How does one confront Saddam Hussein when he is holding cards like that? In such a scenario, regime change becomes nearly impossible, and even pushing Hussein out of Kuwait in 1990 becomes quite scary. The question Dr. Brin, is not "how sure are we that Hussein has a nuclear weapons program", the question is "How sure are you that he does not?" Given that Hussein has withheld food and medicine from his own people, there is no question that the US would have a moral right to attack Iraq, based on Hussein's human rights record alone. Given that there is such a tremendous risk of him building a nuclear weapon, regime change in Iraq becomes a moral impertative for freedom-loving nations.
