Unless you're sharing living quarters with this best friend, the
situations are not entirely comparable.
Or maybe it's a gender-related thing.
I had a roommate in college, the best roommate I ever had in college,
who, if not atheist, was certainly militantly agnostic, and whose
political views were a little out into left field. (She quoted the head
of the "DC Statehood" party a lot, not something that goes over very
well when you butt into a discussion concerning a point of change in
Texas law and project your "DC Statehood" position onto a situation that
leaves your argument completely irrelevant. She was from Maryland.)
We agreed on a lot of things, most importantly what courtesies we
expected of the ideal roommate and what courtesies we were happy to
extend to each other. Our taste in reading overlapped enough that we
could happily swap books and discuss them afterward. (But she threw
Rudy Rucker's _Wetware_ across the room and onto my bed partway through,
and she hated Spider Robinson's _Stardance_ for a reason she felt more
passionately about than I did.) I was in the D&D campaign she ran at
one point, and the only problem that ever created had to do with the
inability of one of the players to take a hint unless he was beaten
about the head with it.
But, to keep peace in the room, we had an agreement not to discuss
either religion or politics, inside or outside the room. If it hadn't
been for that, one of us might have killed the other. :) As it was, we
ended up being bridesmaids in each other's weddings. (Awwwww....)
