According the the DVD each setting in the movie is actually a combination of an average of 3 different locations scattered all over the island. Still gorgeous though, definitely worth a visit. It's on our wishlist...
The DVD is awesome, the extended movie much better that the cinema release and the extra's are truly amazing. You get a real sense of what it must be like to *oversee* such a humongous production, and are overwhelmed by the sheer work put in by the props and wardrobe and makeup dept. let alone the FX! We where very very impressed and watched Two Towers with even more respect for all the work put in...
There's actually a guy who spend a full year and a half (IIRC) making all the chain mail *by hand* by glueing together little rubber hose rings - just to make it look more realistic on screen, because "previous cinematic attempts using e.g. silver-sprayed woollen knits simply never looked real enough". And this guy actually labels that time as the best in his entire life!!!
Watch the extra's, there's so much more. We kept exclaiming they could set up a museum with all the stuff they made (there's enough to fill several identical museums all over the world, e.g. 10 sets where made of each and every costume), we sure would love to look at all the miniature models and elaborate robes and hand-forged swords and jewelry up close...
Can't wait for the second extended DVD to learn all about the making of gollum and the ents...

Wasn't that a dream sequence? (Frodo dreams it) They spend an absurd long time falling, to reach the lake which should have been boiling magma by that depth. ;)

Empire magazine suggests we start lobbying for Best Supporting Actor for Andy Serkis who did the voice (and body movements). I wholeheartedly agree, the voice was brilliant and exactly as I'd imagined it reading the book. Maybe it's time for a new Oscar for Best Voiceover Work? (now that there's an Oscar for Best Animated Feature).Gollum, cool.More than just cool... That computer-generated critter can really act! I really hope I can animate something nearly as well some day.
Ticia ',:)
