Actually, you made your point well, and I agree with most of what you said. However, I think that Bush has gone gone well beyond what was necessary to counter the threat, and has used the tragedy for his own political gain. I don't think the foxhole analogy holds because the threat to us is not as immediate as it is to a GI under fire, and it is not necessary to abandon political debate on the subject of national security to ameliorate that threat, but other than that, point well taken.

Hi Doug,

I would agree that he's used it for his own political gain, but I think that could have been expected? Any politician would have taken advantage of the situation. I guarantee that when Bush runs for a second term you'll see him standing at ground zero surrounded by workers chanting "USA!".

I completely agree that we should not ever abandon political debate on the subject of national security. I do disagree with you on the immediacy of the situation, though. I think we're at risk and shouldn't ignore it.

I used to think that Ari Fleischer and Karl Rove shot themselves in the foot and decreased the effectiveness of their messages by being condescending and arrogant towards the media. I don't think anyone ever really likes a smartass. Yet their attitudes provided a clear policy POV during a time of crisis (when we needed it.) Their dismissive attitudes bother me a little less now.
