They didn't let us use their airspace. The F-111s had to fly around France instead. For a long time this had the title of longest single bombing raid in history - I think that title is now held by the B-2s who launched strikes in Afghanistan from the Mountain Home in Missouri. Despite the occassional snickering about the accidental bombing of the French embassy, we do know that it was accidental because the pilot who dropped the bombs was killed by Libyan antiaircraft fire - which is why they were released off-target. The fact that they hit the French embassy perhaps suggests that God has a sense of humor and/or he doesn't like France, but far be it from me to suggest such a thing...
