This point is rather moot, as he would never have succeeded in taking over the Middle East. He couldn't even hold on to Kuwait, let alone the entire region.I take it you wouldn't have minded if Hussein became much more powerful than Europe after taking over the Middle East.
So, what makes you think I wouldn't have minded if Hussein had taken over the Middle East?
It's 2003 now and he is still in power, so obviously he wasn't stopped. What happened was that the international community joined forces to chase him out of Kuwait. He has stated it was his goal, and only the US was in a position to stop him. Was the US wrong in stopping Hussein in '91.
I think it was indeed wrong to defend Saudi Arabia. By defending it, the world was defending a country known to support terrorism.I'm not even asking if the US was wrong in leading the effort to retake Kuwait, was it wrong in defending Saudi Arabia?
I don't think Saudi Arabia was under any significant threat from an Iraqi takeover. The Gulf War clearly showed that Iraqi soldiers (with the exception of the elite troops) were not overly anxious to fight and die for their country. IIRC, they surrended by the thousands at the first sight of the international forces.
