He was a Frank. They named France after those! (Charlemagne's court was
at Aix-la-Chapelle, and was the centre of a cultural renaissance in
Europe, and he conquered eastward not westward. Even though modern
France and Germany didn't exist then, I think it's fair to say that he
was French. His grandfather, by the way, was Charles Martel, who
defeated the Islamic invasion.)
